This is a prequel, which is never a good sign, and concerns a trio of friends – one of which looks suspiciously like Roxas from Kingdom Hearts II.Each gets their own story mode to play through, although there’s quite a lot of repetition as they explore Disney worlds from Hundred Acre Wood to Peter Pan’s island and the space station from Lilo & Stitch. Since the series has been going for so long (since 2002 on the PlayStation 2) many have grown up with it and the fact that the camera is awful and combat irremediably shallow now all seems merely like part of the appeal.This first PSP outing does show considerable improvement in terms of the combat but not one of the game’s other main foibles: its insanely convoluted storyline. It’s an idea that should never have worked and depending on your point of view it never has…There’s always a difficultly criticising a whole series like this, which has been both financially successful and has a very passionate cadre of fans. Then Square Enix came along with the idea of a crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy. The quality of Disney’s own internally made games has seen a sharp improvement in the last year or so, but before that they were party to only the usual badly made, exploitative tie-ins.
